Tirano
|
Tirano is very close to the border between Italy and Switzerland, and it is an important touristic resort and meeting place of many ways of communication.
The importance of its geographic position guaranteed a sure well-being during the Middle Ages, of which we can see traces in the beautiful noble palaces built between 16th and 17th century. Tirano is famous also for the presence of a Marian sanctuary: the Sanctuary of Madonna di Tirano, that rises in the northern part of the town, considered the most important religious monument of Valtellina. Because of its baroque taste, the grace and the wealth of the decorations, the sculptures and frescoes, the sanctuary is considered, together with the Cathedral of Milan and the Charterhouse of Pavia, one of the three most beautiful churches of Lombardy.
But in Tirano even the lovers of sport can enjoy: there are numerous paths in the area, for pleasant walks in the nature or a mountain bike tour, moreover there is the possibility to climb and to swim in the indoor swimming pool. The winter tourists in Tirano can choose between the several ski areas, all at the same distance from here: Bormio, Livigno, Aprica…
A big attraction of the territory is the Trenino Rosso del Bernina, a small train that, crossing the Val Poschiavo and the Bernina Pass, connects Valtellina to Engadina till Sankt Moritz. The railroads follow a distance that for its beauty and boldness is considered among the most interesting of the world: it is the highest railroad of Europe, and offers beautiful landscapes in any season (the train goes even when it is snowing!).
