Sondrio

Sondrio is the main town of Valtellina and lies on the confluence of rivers Mallero and Adda.
The city still has important traces of its past; the
historical center, crossed by Via Scarpatetti, is characterized by narrow and cobblestone paved streets, stairs and ancient houses with stone walls.
Among the most important monuments, the Castel Masegra, a palace built probably in the first half of the year 1000, with two towers and a portal ofthe 15th century, the parish church dedicated to the Saint patrons of the city, Gervasio and Protasio, and the Palace Sassi de' Lavizzari, where there is the Local History and Art Museum, composed by the archaeological and historical-artistic sections.
Walking along the beautiful Via Dante you can shop in the characteristic stores, where to buy the
famous Valtellina wines (Inferno, Grumello, Sassella and the strong Sforzato), the cheeses Casera and Bitto, the flour made with buckwheat, the bresaola and all the salumi of the mountain tradition, honey and jam.
Not to forget the products of local handicraft with the colored "pezzotti" , handmade carpets, the beautiful objects in iron and the typical "lavecc", a pots made of soapstone, a particular material that holds heat for a long time, so good for stews and foods that need a long cooking.
Sondrio also gives the cue for the tourists who love sports: with a beautiful walk across the vineyards, you can reach the evocative
sanctuary of the Madonna della Sassella, and ancient and fascinating little church, plunged in the nature. In the outskirtses of the city there is a golf course, a lot of paths for the lovers of trekking and mountain bike and plenty of rivers and small lakes where to fish.
