Church of San Giorgio Maggiore

The Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, part of an evocative Benedictine monastery, mirrors in waters of the Canale della Giudecca, in front of Palazzo Ducale.
The first church dedicated to Saint George dates to the 8-9th century. In 982 the whole island was donated to a Benedictine monk, who founded the adjacent San Giorgio Monastery.
But the abbey was demolished and rebuilt five times, before assuming the majestic shapes ita has today, built according the plan of the italian architect Andrea Palladio, in 1566.
Its white facade is quickly recognizable, looking from Piazza San Marco, and it remembers us that this church has been a great not only spiritual but cultural and artistic center since centuries.
Today the tourists visit it also to go up on the bell tower (75 meters) from which they enjoy a wonderful view on the lagoon; very impressive is the ceremony on 31st December, when the monks sing Gregorian chants and are dress with the ancient clothes. A part of the monastery is also open to public, and there it is possibile to buy honey produced by the monks.
