Venice stands on a hundred islands in the Lagoon of Venice, in the Adriatic sea, linked to the mainland by a bridge which was built in the 1930s. Venice and its lagoon are on the Unesco World Heritage list.
There is not a place like it in the world. Floating between the sea and the sky, it is packed with art and history. Venice is not the only city in the world to be built on water, but it is undoubtedly the only one to have preserved the layout and the majority of the buildings from its most prosperous times, when it ruled over the Mediterranean.
From the fourteenth to the sixteenth century, this city-state governed the Mediterranean basin, and was one of the world’s most important economic and political centres, known also by the name of La Serenissima.
One hundred and eighteen islands linked by bridges and canals, on which there are hundreds of palazzi, 190 churches, theatres and museums. This is Venice, the only one of its kind in the world, where you travel by foot, between the calli (streets) and campielli (little squares), or by romantic gondola, ferry or taxi-boat.
The best way to appreciate Venice ’s extraordinary urban layout is to see it from above. The best viewpoints are from the bell towers of San Marco and San Giorgio Maggiore.
From San Marco you can see the complexity of Venice ’s layout, while from San Giorgio you can see the lagoon and the complex of San Marco in all their beauty.
