Piazza Castello
|
Piazza Castello is the main public square of Turin, heart of the historical center of the city.
Planned in 1584 by Ascanio Vitozzi, the square extends on a surface of approximately 40.000 mq, a big part only for pedestrians. Piazza Castello is encircled on three sides by monumental porches, that form noble and solemn spaces, suitable for the great monuments that surround the square.
Piazza Castello is the vital center of the city and, in the period in which the Savoy family lived in Turin, it was the most important place of the Piedmontese State: in it there are, therefore, the most important buildings, of great artistic value. In the middle of the square there is Palazzo Madama, a medieval castle restructured adding the imposing facade in 18th century, while on the sides are located the Royal Palace, the Royal Theatre, the Armory and the Royal Library, the Church of San Lorenzo, important tokens of the history of the city.
