Arona
|
Arona is today an important touristic and commercial center. Since the Middle Ages has been considered a strategic point as placed on one of the main ways that connect Switzerland and Italy, and also today is an optimal place for a trip of a weekend.
The walk on the lake, the ancient piazza and streets of the town create a charming and pleasant atmosphere.
Saint Charles Borromeo was born in Arona and the town remembers him everywhere. Among the places of interest, the Collegiata della Natività di Maria Vergine, the current parish church, to whose inside there are four reliquaries that conserve the dresses and the pastoral staff of saint Charles Borromeo. Another monument in honour of the Saint, is the colossus of San Carlo, a statue, nicknamed the Sancarlone (huge Saint Charles), that dominates Lake Maggiore. The statue is approximately 36 m tall and stands and was realized between 1614 and 1697 with copper slabs. The statue was intended as part of a complex of buildings and chapels celebrating the life of St. Charles, of which only three chapels were completed.
