Monterosso al Mare
|
Monterosso al Mare is the most western of the towns that constitute the Cinque Terre, and it is situated in front of sweet hills cultivated with vines and olive trees. Its wonderful beach (that is the biggest of the Cinque Terre), the wonderful reefs and the crystalline waters of the sea put this small village among the most pleasant of the Eastern Coast. In the 16th century Monterosso had thirteen towers, of which remain the three round towers in the castle, the medieval one, that today is the bell tower of the church of San Giovanni, and the tower Aurora, situated over the hill of the Cappuccini, that separates the ancient village from the modern one. Noteworthy is the church of San Francesco (XVII century), where there are works of remarkable importance among which the Crocifissione attributed to Van Dyck.
The sea is crystalline here, and thanks to this particularity, you can enjoy interesting dives; besides the sea, the Cinque Terre offer the possibility to contact the nature walking by foot, as an example starting from Punta Mesco, the mount that closes the gulf of Monterosso. The mount iss part of the National Park of Cinque Terre and has charming reefs: a beautiful promenade allows here to reach the so-called "Semaforo"( traffic light): an old abandoned lighthouse, from where you can enjoy a spectacular view on the sea.
