Trevi Fountain
|
Trevi Fountain is the biggest and most famous fountain of Rome: the scene from the movie La Dolce Vita by Federico Fellini is unforgettable: Anita Ekberg dives into the basin, inviting Marcello Mastroianni to follow her.
Probably thanks also to this episode, the fountain is today visited by thousands of tourists; this huge work of art covers a side of Palazzo Poli, and it is characterized by the sculptures of the 18th century, all referring to the sea; the scene is dominated from a shell shaped coach, pulled by sea horses, on which there is the great statue of Ocean. In the fountain, baroque sculpture and architecture melt perfectly, in an evocative water show.
The public square in front of the fountain is always crowded of tourists, day and night: according to a famous tradition, if you throw a coin in the water, with your back toward the fountain, you are sure you will come back to Rome. The coins, collected daily, are used by the municipality of Rome to help the poor.
