Piazza di Spagna
|
Piazza di Spagna, with the gorgeous stairway of Trinità dei Monti, is one of the most famous public squares of Rome. Its name comes from the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the spanish embassy in the Holy See.
In the middle of the public square there is the famous Fontana della Barcaccia, that dates back to the first baroque period, carved by Pietro Bernini and his son, the more known Gian Lorenzo Bernini. To the right side of the stairway, there is the house of the English poet John Keats, who lived some years and died here in 1821, today transformed into a museum dedicated to him and his friend Percy Bysshe Shelley, full of books and memorabilia of the English Romanticism.
The monumental stairway (135 steps) was inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII in occasion of the Jubilee in 1725; it was built in order to connect the Spanish embassy to the church of Trinità dei Monti. Today we can admire a great stairway decorated with numerous terrace-garden, that in spring and summer are full of flowers. This makes of Piazza di Spagna one of the places symbol of Rome and a destination which cannot be renounced for every tourist.
