Castel Sant Angelo
|
Castel Sant'Angelo is a roman monument, built between 123 and 129 A.D. by the emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family and it was radically modified during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when it was turned into a castle. He took its current name in the year 590, when, during a plague epidemic, Pope Gregory I had a vision of Archangel Michael on the roof of the castle, announcing the end of the pestilence.
It is located on the right side of the river Tiber, in front of the Bridge Sant'Angel and not far from Vatican City, with which it is connected thanks to the Passetto, a part of Vaticans Walls on which it there is a passage that leads to the castle from the Vatican Palaces, in order to allow the Pope to shelter in case of danger.
In the 19th century the castle was used exclusively as jail: inside you can still visit parts of the jail, as the cells, the Room of Justice and the courtyard were the prisoners were executed.
In 1926 the castle became a Museum: today it is open to the public and you can see precious works of art and the rests of the decoration of roman age.
