Bell Tower of St Mark's
|
The bell tower of San Marco is one of the symbols of the city of Venice.
It is in a cornere of the Piazza San Marco, in front of the basilica: its construction began in the 11th century, but on 14th July 1902, damaged by fires and earthquakes, the bell tower collapsed. The reconstruction began immediately, and the new bell tower, identical to the previous one, have been inaugurated on 25th april 1912, on the occasion of the festivity of Saint Mark.
During the carnival one of the attractions consists in the flight of the Colombina: a funambulist goes, hanging on a rope, from the bell tower and the Loggia of the Ducale Palace, starting officially the festival of the Carnival, with a blaze of colour and balloons.
