The Loggia della Signoria or dei Lanzi (because here the "Lanzichenecchi" -Landsknechts- camped in 1527), was built between 1376 and 1381 with the function of accommodating the numerous popular public assemblies and the official ceremonies of the Republic of Florence, like those of installation of the lordships.
From the architectonic point of view, the construction joins gothic elements to ones of classic matrix.
In the course of the 1500 the loggia lost the original function, and became an open air museum of the sculptures of the medicea collection. In 1555 Cosimo I placed here the Perseus by Benvenuto Cellini and in 1585 Francisco I placed the Rape of the Sabine by Giambologna. At the end of the 1700 a new preparation was created, with the positioning in the Loggia of numerous ancient sculptures moved to Florence from Villa Medici in Rome.
