Varenna
|
Varenna rises on a promontory at the foot of a mountain that has been exploited for centuries because of its richness in black marble; today the quarries are closed, and Varenna became an important touristic center. The town has an enviable panorama: in front of it the three branches of the lake divide and you have a lovely view over the green promontory of Bellagio and the further towns of Menaggio and Cadenabbia.
It is a colorful village, characterized by small houses following one to each other, sometimes with frescoes or coats of arms, very close one to the other and united by arches; therefore in Varenna you can see long and narrow streets that steeply lead to the lake.
Among the places to visit, we remember the church of SanGiorgio, that rises on the main public square of the town, with on the façade a fresco representing SanCristoforo, and the evocative Villa Cipressi, that rises on the southern river of the cape.
It was rebuilt several times until, in the second half of the 1800's, it reached the current neoclassical shape. The name means cypresses, because of the secular trees that characterize the garden, with terraces on the lake.
Other important historical dwelling is Villa Monastero, one of the most interesting examples of a residence in eclectic style, with garden of great impact and symbolic value.
