Palazzo Ducale - Genoa
|
The Palazzo Ducale of Genoa is one of the main historical buildings of the city, and one of the main museums of Genoa. Abandoned for a long time, it has been completely restored in 1992 and today it accommodates important art exhibitions, conventions and shows and, in the courtyards and in the porches, stores and bars. The construction of the palace began at the end of the 13th century, in a moment of great splendor for the old republic of Genoa. To the medieval period is dated also a part of the Grimaldina Tower that was built in 1539; only from the end of the 16th century were built the courtyards that still today are one of the most spectacular parts of the whole complex. In 1777 part of the building was destroyed by a fire. The reconstruction of the facade, in monumental neoclassical style, and of the inner halls, was assigned to the architect Simone Cantoni. Inside, noteworthy are the Room of the Jazz, the Room of the Cinema, the one of the Poetry, the Robotics, the Photography... a way around the different arts.
