Genoa's Port
|
The Ancient Port is a part of the port of Genoa that has been transformed from a dead zone of the marine port to a cultural and entertainment center of the city. Its total restoration has been completed in 1992 on plan of the architect Renzo Piano. In the quarter there are many buildings of artistic and cultural interest, among which some mansions of the 17th century. Today in the harbour area the tourists can visit the Aquarium, interesting and amusing; but it is not the only reason of interest: in the harbour you will find Porta Siberia, a door that was part of the walls built between 1551 and 1553, the former warehouses of the cotton, today seat of bars, restaurants and playground areas for children and many other buildings. And then, if you want to have a look to this beautiful city from an higher point of view, there is also the Bigo, planned by Renzo Piano, a structure that has the shape and the name of the old cranes, and raises a panoramic lift that goes up to nearly 50 meters, offering an unusual sight on the city. At the harbour you will be able also to see the symbol of the city: the Tower of the Lanterna (or, more simply, the Lanterna), the lighthouse of Genoa. The Lanterna is 76 meters high, the first construction is dated to medieval age, and today annexed to the tower there is the Museum of the Lanterna.
